Pouring a perfect pint of Guinness and adding a design to the foam takes skill and precision. Here’s how you can do both:

- Use the Right Glass: A clean, dry Guinness-branded pint glass (tulip-shaped) is ideal.
- Tilt the Glass: Hold the glass at a 45-degree angle under the tap.
- Pull the Tap Handle: Pull the tap all the way forward and let the Guinness flow smoothly down the side of the glass.
Note: Do not submerge the tap in the beer. - Fill to the Harp: Stop pouring when the glass is about ¾ full (around the harp logo on a branded glass).
- Let It Settle: Place the glass on the bar and allow the nitrogen bubbles to settle, forming the iconic separation between dark beer and creamy head.
This takes about 90 seconds. - Top It Off: Hold the glass straight up and push the tap backward for a slower pour.
Fill to just above the rim, forming a dome-shaped creamy head.
Creating a Design in the Foam
- Use a Toothpick or a Guinness Spoon: A clean toothpick or a Guinness harp spoon can help you lightly draw designs.
- Pour a Shamrock (or Other Design): Just before the head fully sets, use the tap to gently drizzle a small amount of Guinness on top of the foam in a circular motion.
With a toothpick, lightly drag through the foam to shape the design.
A simple shamrock can be created by making three small circles and drawing a line through them with the toothpick. - Alternative: Use a Latte Art Stencil: Some bartenders use stencils and a fine mist of Guinness to imprint logos or designs on top.
